We're about to start some fresh sleep training, since he's now getting up at least twice a night but is really old enough to sleep through without eating. I'm down to pumping once at work, which means I now get a 15-minute break where I just eat lunch, instead of eating lunch and milking myself. Moving on up!

Ten Months Old
Col's moved from standing to cruising this month, with /n/ and /m/ added to his phonemic arsenal--meaning yes! I have heard the word "Mama" uttered. Though not yet with meaning.

There and Back Again
I've got a backlog of photos stretching from mid-June to the present, a select few of which I post here. These begin at our old house, around the time when Uncle Tim and Aunt Caitlin visited (but left no photographic evidence of themselves).
Our two-week trip to the US was a whirlwind time of connection with family and friends (although also a bittersweet reminder of how many friends and family we didn't get to see on this trip). We started off in Corvallis with Oma and Opa, and Ahbee and Pakka drove up to visit us too. Then we took just Col to our friends Josh and April's wedding about an hour away, where I was honored to officiate and Lars and I celebrated our twelfth anniversary on their zeroeth. After we picked Tor up from Corvallis, we drove up the Oregon Coast to camp on the beach as a family. Then we ended up in Portland for Independence Day festivities with Dan, Julia, and their daughter Molly, before flying out veeery early the morning of July 5th and arriving home the 6th. And of course, we stumbled back to work on the 7th. Whew!
Once back at home, we dove into our routine. One key purchase for our commute: a Tor seat for the back of my bike. Now either Lars or me can tow around both kids. It's a game changer, practically eliminating the need for the bus in our weekend forays, unless they're out of town. From the new house, we can be in the city center in 8 minutes flat.
Col is getting increasingly confident at pulling up on things. He's also started to give high fives, which is about the most adorable thing ever, and to clap (usually for himself, sometimes to music). He is at that stage where if there's something on the floor, he finds it.
Thinking to escape the heat in the movie theater, we took the kids to see The Lego Movie. Funny thing about English theaters: not air conditioned.
And we finally tried punting, a traditional Oxford pastime that involves pushing a little rectangular boat around with a long, heavy pole. Rhonda and Tamer came along and Tamer bravely took the first shift.

Tor is loving walking around the park behind our house. There's a path ringing it with exercise equipment every 500 meters or so (see how I'm converting?). We like to walk around it in the evenings, and Tor's getting good at jumping up and swinging on monkey bars.

Lars got out the instruments that have been in cases for years, including the banjo, which Tor immediately adopted. They sing "the blues" together and Tor makes up songs. A recent one had to do with a Dali painting that we have a poster of, "Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bumblebee around a Pomegranate a Second before Awakening." He summed it up pretty well: "There's an elephant with reaaaally long legs! And a bee flying around a pomegranate! And the fish and tigers are jumping out of it!"

Nine Months Old
What hasn't Col done this past month! Here are some of the highlights:
- Cut not one--not two--not three--but FOUR teeth! We are talking full beaver over here. He's started to nip a little bit, at which point the soda fountain gets shut.
- Started pulling himself up to standing using furniture, legs, step stools, and especially boxes, given that we've just moved to a new house. I love seeing the toes on his flat, fat baby feet grip as he struggles for purchase.
- Taken his inaugural journey in the bike trailer, cutting our commute time to and from day care by two thirds
- Weathered his second round-trip transatlantic flight with aplomb, earning himself the praise of fellow travelers in both directions
- Visited both sets of grandparents and assorted friends
- Expanded his solid food repertoire to include chicken, beef, and pork, as well as several more kinds of vegetables, fruits, cheeses, and carbohydrates

I have a slew of lovely vacation pictures to post when I can steal the time. What the blog really needs is for Lars to take a trip so I have no one to hang out with after the kids go to bed. I'll try to be more diligent this month lest I amass more photos than I can reasonably sort through for one post!

Eight Months Old (a week ago)
Lest anyone feared, Col did indeed reach eight months. A confluence of events prevented me from posting timely, but here are a couple of photos of The Tank with his grandmothers. We're currently spending some vacation with both our parents at my folks' house. I'll post a slew of photos when we return to the UK the second week of July. Feels great to be stateside for a spell!

Holding Down the Fort
A few things have gone down since Col's six-month post. In chronological order:
I am once again as old as Lars. We marked the occasion with a lunchtime outing to the botanical gardens and an evening of drinks and The Amazing Spiderman 2.

| Grey is the traditional English colour for birthdays |
We celebrated Easter--Col's first--with church in the morning and dinner at Lars's colleague's house. They have a five-year-old daughter and an eight-year-old son who very kindly include Tor in their play. Also, one of their relatives works for Playmobil, so they have acres and acres of Playmobil sets whose color was a little off or who were packaged missing a piece, including a practically life-sized castle filled with knights and dragons. It's cool enough that I want to hide upstairs with the kids and play with it.

Tor found the pink balloon he's holding in the garden of the place we ate lunch. Earlier that day, he had helped me pick out a huge helium Tinkerbell balloon for a two-year-old's upcoming birthday party. Alas, on the walk home, Tor demanded that I carry him while pushing the stroller, and in the kerfuffle, Tinkerbell slipped off her string and flew away into the sky. The rest of the walk involved Tor slung over my shoulder, arms outstretched toward the heavens, screaming "TINKERBELLLLL" as if his heart were broken. Fortunately the passers-by were few.

The picture above is the last picture I took of Lars before he jetted off on a two-week conference hop from Vienna to Marrakesh. You know your partner feels guilty about leaving you with the kids when he insists again and again that "it's not a vacation." (Just kidding, you breadwinner you!) Concurrently with this trip, I started a new job at the Oxford University Press--as in, my first day of work was the day before Lars flew out. Here's where I park my bike:

Finally, this tickled me: Tor got to pick out a bag of candy for a prize when he sleeps through the night, and he chose a sour gummy candy called Haribo Tangfastics. Yesterday, he slept through the night, and he selected a gummy shaped like a coke bottle, with a white back and a brown front. When I asked him what flavor he thought it would be, he said, "It's brown, so it tastes like kiwi. And this part is white, so it tastes like snow." This morning, he picked a green and white one. "The green part is apple flavor. And the white part is garlic flavor." Amazingly, he enjoyed it.
